Steps in the migration process
GoDaddy now offers email migration services to Office 365. We take care of all the hard work to move your email data from wherever you are to Office 365. At each step, we will email you and your email users with reminders, and any instructions required to complete the transition.Take a look at the videos and the step-by-step process, below, so you can know what to expect.
If you have set up your Outlook client with POP email settings, you and your users are REQUIRED to download and install the Outlook Setup Assistant in order to migrate any local data. The Assistant will copy over your client configurations and prepare each desktop with the existing settings. Be sure your computer/users all fit requirements. Please see What is the Outlook Migration Assistant? for more information.

Starting the Migration
In order to begin your migration to Office 365, you will need to contact a GoDaddy customer support representative so they can walk you through customizing your migration, including:
- What mailboxes will be migrating into Office 365
- Setting up an Office Add-ons, such as Advanced Email Security, Archiving, or Email Backup
- Adding email aliases, distribution groups and/or forwarding addresses
- Choosing a date to start using Office 365
Step 1: Domain Verification
Office 365 setup requires you to prove you own your domain by entering a TXT record on the domain DNS. We will be sending you the instructions to update your DNS via email. It is important to get this done as early as possible, or else your migration may be delayed! The change will not interrupt your current email service.
Note: If you already setup your Office 365 accounts prior to contacting our support team, or if your domain and DNS are in the same GoDaddy account as the migration, we will perform this step for you.
Step 2: Collecting Passwords
- In order for us to migrate email from your current email service into Office 365, we need to be able to access your accounts to start the data sync. In order to accomplish this, our migration partner, SkyKick (firstname.lastname@example.org) will send each end-user an email with a unique secure link that will ask you or your users to provide their email address and password. This is your current email address and password you are using now.
Once you have enter your current information, the page will ask you to set a password for your new Office 365 account. This is the password you will use to access your new account.
- After creating your new password, we will begin migrating emails in the background while you continue to use your current email service.
Note: If you are migrating from GoDaddy Workspace Email, you don't have to enter your current email passwords. We already have everything we need to handle this part, and you don't need to provide any extra details, or any passwords, to proceed.
Step 3: Download the Outlook Assistant
Be sure you and your end users are qualified to use this program by going over the qualifications. Please see What is the Outlook Migration Assistant? for more information. If you are not eligible, you may not be getting all the data that you are expecting.
To make the migration process smoother, and allow us to move even more of your data and settings, we recommend that you and your email users download and install the Outlook Assistant, before your scheduled upgrade date. The Assistant is only available for Windows PC users
If the qualified users download and install the program prior to the migration date, the SkyKick Outlook Assistant (SKOA) does the following for them:
- Automatically creates a new profile in Outlook that will use the new Office 365 email
- Migrate local .PST content from the old email into the new profile. This means things like:
- POP email data
- Autocomplete cache
The account holder will receive daily reports on the Outlook Setup Assistant downloads by your email users. We highly recommend that everyone (who can) downloads and installs the Assistant, as early in the process as possible.
Anyone not able to use the Outlook Setup Assistant will have to manually move any local content that they want, and set up their client manually as well. We will send instructions to these users on the migration date. Mac users and those without Outlook setup cannot use the Setup Assistant.
Step 4: Migration Day - DNS cutover
On the date and time you chose earlier with your support representative, it will be time to start using Office 365. You will need to change your DNS settings to point to Office 365, and you will begin using your new email.
These settings will be emailed to you 8 hours prior to the migration, so if you need to take steps to prepare with your DNS provider, be ready to give them these DNS instructions. If your domain and DNS are with GoDaddy, we will make these changes for you.
If you downloaded SKOA, the DNS will need to be updated in order for SKOA to finish your Outlook client setup successfully.
Step 5: Finishing touches
When you start using your email, almost all of the data will be there, but it is possible that you’ll be missing some of your newer emails. Once you begin using Office 365, you will want to allow for up to 48 hours while we sync final emails from your old email server into your new Office 365 account.
On top of this, we will continue to monitor your old email accounts for up to 72 hours, in case there are any emails misrouted during the transition.
Enjoy your upgrade to Office 365!
